Krakowiak
We had so much fun researching Krakowiak, the Polish installment from our Folk Stitch series, exploring the intricate handwork found on vintage garments in museum collections. Traditional heavy embroidery was often applied to woven fabric not only for decoration, but also to reinforce and strengthen areas of the garment that experienced the most wear.
We hope that as you stitch Krakowiak, you feel a connection to the talented stitchers of the past and the beautiful traditions they carried forward.
This 11" x 17" oval wool appliqué mat features vibrant green, gold, red, and burgundy artisan-dyed wool layered on a rich black wool background. Green half circles create a distinctive border around the outer edge, while red and yellow flowers are surrounded by sweeping green leaves.
The design is richly embellished with Valdani perle cotton embroidery and shimmering silver metallic seed beads, adding beautiful texture, dimension, and detail to this striking piece inspired by Polish folk embroidery.
A meaningful celebration of traditional handwork, Krakowiak is a wonderful project for stitchers who appreciate the history, craftsmanship, and artistry behind folk-inspired needlework.
